More than 1 million chickens dead after massive fire in southern Illinois – NBC Chicago

A massive fire on a farm in southern Illinois has, according to officials, killed over a million birds and completely destroyed the facility.

According to NBC affiliate KSDK, the fire broke out around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday in Farina, a community in Marion County.

Marion County Sheriff Kevin Cripps told KSDK that several buildings at the scene were fully engulfed in flames and smoke was visible for miles. More than two dozen fire departments were called to help bring the blaze under control.

State Rep. Blaine Wilhour confirmed on his Facebook page that more than a million birds were killed in the fire that ravaged Farina Farms’ free-range chicken facility.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated by the Illinois State Fire Marshal. No injuries were reported during the major operation.
