A nurse manipulated and raped a defenseless young girl he was supposed to care for.

Kevin Cooper-Shaw committed a series of crimes against the underage victim at a care home in Ellesmere Port where he worked.

Shortly after the abuse was reported to Cheshire Police in November 2021, Cooper-Shaw was arrested and indecent images of children were found on his phone, police said.

The 45-year-old was sentenced to 16 years in prison, suspended for a further three years, on Friday after a jury at Chester Crown Court found him guilty.

“Really horrific”

In total, the jury found that he had committed 19 sexual offenses against the girl, including rape, sexual acts by a person of trust with a child and other offenses.

The paedophile, of Kingsmead Road North in Oxton, Wirral, was also found guilty of two counts of producing indecent images of children.

Det. Con Katie Ashcroft, who led the investigation, described Cooper-Shaw’s crime as “truly horrific”.

“Cooper-Shaw should be in a position of trust and protect and care for young people,” she said.

“Despite knowing this and knowing how vulnerable the victim was, Cooper-Shaw abused and betrayed that trust. He abused and deeply traumatised the young victim at a time when she should have felt safe.”

DC Ashcroft also praised the girl’s courage in reporting the crimes and giving evidence in court.

She added: “I hope this encourages others who have been subjected to such abuse to come forward.

“They receive the support and advice they need to cope with the ordeal and, if they wish, bring their abuser to justice.”
