Jackson County auditor arrested for embezzling over $18,000

A former southern Indiana auditor has been arrested after allegedly stealing thousands of dollars from the county. According to Indiana State Police, the investigation began in April when the Indiana State Board of Accounts discovered possible wrongdoing by former Jackson County Auditor Staci Eglen. Investigators say during the investigation, they discovered Eglen forged two invoices and then forwarded them to the Jackson County Treasurer’s office for reimbursement and deposited the checks into her personal bank accounts. Investigators also say Elgen received at least two checks from the treasurer’s office that were issued to her while she was an employee of the Hamilton Township Trustee’s office. She allegedly deposited those checks into her bank account for personal purchases as well. Eglen is believed to have stolen more than $18,000 from the county, according to ISP. Eglen resigned from her position as auditor when the investigation began, ISP says. She was arrested without incident on Friday and taken to the Jackson County Jail. Eglen is accused of fraud, theft and abuse of office.

According to the Indiana State Police, the investigation began in April when the Indiana State Board of Accounts discovered possible misconduct by former Jackson County Auditor Staci Eglen.

Investigators said that during the course of their investigation, they discovered that Eglen altered two invoices and then forwarded them to the Jackson County Treasurer for reimbursement and deposited the checks into her personal bank accounts.

According to investigators, Elgen also received at least two checks from the Treasury Department that were issued to her while she was an employee of the Hamilton Township Trustee’s Office.

She allegedly also deposited these checks into her bank account for private purchases.

According to the ISP, Eglen is said to have stolen more than $18,000 from the county.

Eglen resigned from her position as auditor when the investigation began, ISP says.

She was arrested without incident on Friday and taken to the Jackson County Jail.

Eglen is accused of fraud, theft and abuse of office.
