PGA Tour golfer Grayson Murray has died one day after withdrawing from the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, PGA Tour officials said.

No cause of death was given. He was 30 years old.

“We were devastated to learn – and heartbroken to share – that PGA Tour player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words,” PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said in a statement on Saturday.

Two-time PGA Tour winner Murray withdrew two holes before the end of the second round of the tournament on Friday due to illness.

Earlier this year, Murray won the Sony Open in a playoff against former PGA Championship winner Keegan Bradley and South Korean An Byeong-hun, ending a six-and-a-half-year winless streak during which he admitted to struggling with mental and physical problems.

CNN has asked tournament organizers for more information.

Murray plays his shot from the 17th tee during the final round of the Sony Open in Hawaii at Waialae Country Club on January 14, 2024 in Honolulu, Hawaii.

A native of Raleigh, North Carolina, Murray was considered one of the best young players in the world, winning three IMG Junior World titles in 2006, 2007 and 2008. According to the PGA Tour, he was the second-youngest player to make the cut on the Korn Ferry Tour at age 16, and he played in the 2013 U.S. Open at age 19. He won the 2017 Barbasol Championship at just 23 years old.

“Grayson was the absolute best. Not only was he an incredible, thoughtful and generous boss, but he was an even better friend,” his caddie Jay Green said in a statement, according to Golf Channel’s Brentley Romine. “He would truly do anything for anyone. He has the best family and my heart goes out to them. We will all miss him very much.”

Murray’s agent Kevin Canning said in a statement to CNN: “We are saddened and heartbroken to learn of the sudden passing of Grayson Murray. Grayson was a long-time member of the GSE family and the news this morning has shocked us all.”

And in an X-post, former Masters winner Bubba Watson said he was “very sad” to learn of Grayson’s death.

“I just hugged you at the Masters and told you how proud I am of you,” he recalled. “I’m grateful to have known you. My deepest condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time. He will be missed.”

Murray has spoken openly about some of the issues that affected his golf career, including alcohol. According to an interview with the PGA, he spent time in rehab and also struggled with anxiety.
