Man found dead in East Alton home after shootout with police

Police believe the suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

EAST ALTON, Ill. – A suspect was found dead in an East Alton home early Friday morning after shooting at police officers.

East Alton Police Chief Scott Golike told 5 On Your Side that the incident began Thursday evening when officers were called to a home on Lakeside Avenue to investigate a bullet hole.

While police were on the scene, Golike said a man fired shots at police, leading to a standoff. Officers returned fire on the suspect.

Officers later found the suspect dead inside the home, suffering from a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound, Golike said. He was armed with multiple firearms.

A patrol car was hit by a bullet, but no officers were injured in the incident, police said.
