Nurse Lucy Letby loses appeal against baby killer despite investigation by New York

A British nurse considered one of the most prolific serial killers of children in modern times has been refused permission to appeal against her conviction for the murder of seven babies and the attempted murder of six more.

Lucy Letby lost her final attempt to have the verdicts overturned in a decision by the Court of Appeal of England and Wales on Friday. The 34-year-old was found guilty in August of fatally attacking children in her care in a neonatal unit at a hospital in northwest England between 2015 and 2016.

Judge Victoria Sharp said at a brief hearing on Friday, according to the BBC, that the court had “decided to refuse leave to appeal on all grounds and to dismiss all related applications.” The judge said a full judgment would be announced at a later date.

Following her conviction, Letby was sentenced to 14 life terms in prison – a rare punishment usually reserved for the most serious offenders in the UK.

The decision to dismiss Letby’s lawsuit came after the publication of a New Yorker Earlier this month, Rachel Aviv conducted an investigation that raised questions about some of the evidence used in the trial that led to her conviction. Due to restrictions on the article, readers in the UK were unable to access it as easily as other articles in the magazine.

A spokesman for the newspaper told Press Gazette: “In order to comply with a court order restricting coverage of the ongoing trial of Lucy Letby, The New Yorker has restricted access to Rachel Aviv’s article for readers in the UK.”

Letby is due to face another trial in June for attempted murder in connection with an alleged attack on a little girl in 2016.
