Channel 11 investigation into Social Security overpayments nominated for Pulitzer Prize – WPXI

An investigation into Social Security Administration overpayments by Cox Media Group and KFF Health News is now a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Public Service.

This award, considered the most prestigious Pulitzer Prize, is a historic achievement as CMG is the first local broadcast media company to be a finalist for this award.

Reporting from eight CMG investigative teams, including 11 Investigates, KFF Health News and CMG’s Washington News Bureau, details the Social Security Administration’s systemic overpayments of vulnerable Americans. Since the investigation began, policy changes have been implemented and SSA announced internal changes, demonstrating the profound impact journalism can have.

In our reporting, WPXI reporter Amy Hudak brought you the stories of local families struggling to cope with their debt after being told they would owe thousands in overpayments. Our investigation also helped restore Social Security benefits to a Pittsburgh veteran.

The investigation gained traction in the nation’s capital as lawmakers demanded answers from the Social Security Administration and called for congressional hearings. Eventually, officials took action and the SSA made significant changes to how it handles overpayments.

In 2023, the group’s investigative teams broadcast more than 100 news stories and distributed content across the country, amplifying the impact of the investigations by reaching millions of people on air and online.
