Police destroy grenade in Vancouver Park | One dead in Penticton

A bomb squad has safely detonated an old grenade found in a garden near the Olympic Village.

Vancouver Police Department explosives experts were called in Sunday morning following the discovery and, after examining the grenade, confirmed it was “still a potential hazard,” the VPD said on social media Sunday.

Neighbors reported hearing a loud bang around 11 a.m. coming from the area of Hinge Park, which also includes a playground and dog park.

Police did not comment on how long the device was in the park or how it might have ended up there.

No injuries were reported.

One person was fatally injured in Penticton

One person has died after an overnight brawl in Penticton.

Police responded around 2 a.m. Sunday to a report of “an altercation between multiple people on Lakeshore Drive.”

One of the people involved was seriously injured and has since died, said BC RCMP Cpl. James Grandy in a press release.

“The investigation is in its early stages and is supported by numerous RCMP resources,” Grandy said. “Police are investigating this as a criminal offense and would like to reassure the public that this appears to be a targeted act.”

Grandy said officers are investigating the area and are asking the public to avoid Lakeshore Drive at Power Street and the skate park at Riverside Park.
