Dalit PhD student moves Bombay High Court against suspension of TISS

Dalit PhD student Ramadas KS, who was suspended from the Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS), has filed a relief petition in the Bombay High Court.

According to the Indian Express, the student sought quashing of the order on the ground that it was the fundamental right of every citizen, including students, to freedom of thought and expression.

TISS had suspended Ramadas for allegedly engaging in activities that were “not in the interest of the nation”.

In a communication to Ramadas on March 7, TISS termed its role in the screening of the documentary “Ram Ke Naam” on January 26 as a “mark of shame and protest” against the consecration of the Ram Mandir idol in Ayodhya.

It said that while participating in the protest in Delhi under the banner PSF-TISS, the institute’s name was “misused”, which gave a false impression that the PSF had some connection with the TISS and that its views were influenced by the institute would be supported.

The student, who is pursuing a PhD in development studies, was also denied entry to TISS campuses in Mumbai, Tuljapur, Hyderabad and Guwahati.
