KDOC and KBI are investigating the deaths of residents at Hutchinson Correctional Facility

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (WIBW) – The Kansas Department of Correction and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation are investigating the death of a resident at Hutchinson Correctional Facility, per protocol.

Kansas Department of Corrections officials said Hutchinson Correctional Facility (HCF) resident Scott Edward Wood, 49, died on Friday, May 10, 2024. He was found lifeless in his cell on Friday afternoon. The staff immediately began life-saving measures and continued after the emergency services arrived. Wood was taken to a local hospital where medical staff pronounced him dead. The cause of death is pending the results of an independent autopsy.

KDOC officials said the death of a resident in KDOC custody is being investigated by KDOC and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, according to the protocol. The investigation is ongoing.

KDOC officials noted that Wood was serving a 50-month sentence for drug possession and aggravated escape convictions in Sedgwick County, Kansas.

According to KDOC, Hutchinson Correctional Facility is the third largest facility in the state. It only serves adult men and has a capacity of 1,788 residents.
