OLATHE, Kan. — A new $29 million police station recently opened in Olathe and will have a ribbon cutting Friday afternoon.

Back in August 2022, they began construction on this new police headquarters at Old 56 Highway and Harrison Street.

It replaces the original police station built in 1983. The old building was narrow and dark, making it difficult for officers to do their jobs.

This new building is spacious and bright, with plenty of room for expansion as the department grows.

They currently employ more than 200 officers and the architects worked with the police on the design.

“We were involved in almost every aspect of the design, whether it was choosing the colors for things, the operational layout of the rooms, or the grouping of things,” Police Chief Mike Butaud said.

“It’s a really well-planned building. We invested a lot of time.”

The ribbon cutting will take place today at 3 p.m. and the public is welcome to attend.

They also plan to build a new firing range and training facility soon to help recruit new officers.
