Hawaii wide receiver Steven McBride caught a long pass in front of San Diego State cornerback Chris Johnson during the first half of a college football game at Ching Complex on Oct. 14, 2023.

The University of Hawaii has suspended Steven McBride indefinitely from its football team activities after the star wide receiver was arrested on allegations of mistreatment of a household member.

According to Honolulu police records, McBride, 22, was arrested at 7 a.m. Saturday. McBride remained in a police cell until this morning.

UH head coach Timmy Chang said coaches were notified of the arrest on Saturday. “He is suspended from team activities until further notice,” Chang said.

McBride will continue to receive the scholarship and will be allowed to continue attending classes during the suspension.

UH athletic director Craig Angelos said it was “standard protocol under our university’s policy to suspend an individual until further notice and wait to see how that plays out within the university’s law enforcement and Title IX processes.”

Angelos said that when there is an allegation of abuse against a student-athlete, “whether on campus or off, we are obligated to report it to our Title IX office, and they also conduct their own investigations.”

The Rainbow Warriors completed their summer strength/conditioning program on Friday. The Warriors will begin training camp on Monday, with the first practice scheduled for Wednesday morning. They will open the season on August 24 at the TC Ching Complex against Delaware State. UH’s fall semester begins on August 26.

After playing in 24 games over three seasons at the University of Kansas, McBride transferred to UH last year. He led the Rainbow Warriors with a team-best 1,204 yards on 63 receptions and scored nine touchdowns.
