Ball hockey player arrested after brutal attack on referee

A ball hockey player in Quebec City has been arrested and faces charges after allegedly attacking a referee, causing gruesome injuries, Global News reports.

According to the North American Ball Hockey Players Association (NBHPA), the alleged assault occurred on Tuesday evening when the referee ejected the player from the game.

“Yesterday, a tragedy occurred. A referee who sent a player off the game was attacked by the offending player. He received a stick blow to the chest, followed by a stick blow (with both hands) directly to the face!” the NBHPA wrote on Facebook (translated from French).

The NBHPA said the referee suffered a skull fracture, a broken jaw, a concussion and all of his teeth were either broken or dislocated. He will require facial reconstruction surgery and will be unable to work for the foreseeable future.

Quebec City police confirmed that an investigation was ongoing and a 31-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident.

“The man was questioned and released on a promise to appear in court. He is accused of assault with a weapon and assault,” Quebec City police said in a statement.

Although the attack did not occur in an affiliated arena, the NBHPA banned the player for life. The association also sent congratulations to the referee.

“All our thoughts are with this referee of our community who will be going through very difficult times in the coming days,” the NBHPA wrote.
