An arriving and departing aircraft attempted to use the same runway, sparking an investigation, the FAA said – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

(CNN) — The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says it is investigating an incident in which a commercial flight in upstate New York aborted landing because another aircraft apparently took off from the runway that the first aircraft was attempting to use this week.

The immediate aftermath of Monday’s incident at New York’s Hancock International Airport was captured on video footage from the North Syracuse Police Department’s dashboard camera. The video shows the two planes appearing to fly close to each other; it is not clear how close the two planes were.

The incident occurred around 11:50 a.m. when “an air traffic controller instructed PSA Airlines 5511 at Syracuse Hancock International Airport to make a go-around to maintain a distance from an aircraft departing from the same runway,” an FAA spokesperson said in a press release.

Preliminary data from FlightRadar24 shows that the PSA flight from Washington and the New York-bound Endeavor Air 5421 were only 625 feet apart vertically when their courses began to cross.

So far, the FAA has not classified the incident as a near-collision.
