Houston woman narrowly escapes car being submerged in floodwaters from Hurricane Beryl

HOUSTON – Although Hurricane Beryl left the Houston area Monday night, residents are still dealing with significant flooding and extensive damage.

Downed trees, debris and scattered leaves have become commonplace in neighborhoods, causing disruption and danger.

As cleanup efforts continue, the extent of the damage is becoming increasingly apparent.

One of the hardest hit areas is White Oak Bayou. KPRC 2’s Corley Peel described the severe flooding, noting that the entire area was under water due to the bayou overflowing. The flood gauge showed a water level of seven feet, down from 10 feet, indicating a slow but steady receding of flood waters.

Tracy Newman shared her harrowing experience of being caught in rising waters while trying to run a fast race.

Along with her German shepherd puppy and a friend, Newman said she was stuck in her car as the water level soared.

Newman described the water rising rapidly, making it impossible to open the car doors. She managed to escape by pushing her puppy out the window and doing the same. Her quick actions prevented what could have been a tragedy.

Another resident, who grew up in the area and still lives nearby, compared the flooding to past storms, including Hurricane Harvey. She noted the unusual speed of the waters and the high winds that accompanied the storm. Despite the severity of the situation, she observed that most people avoided flooded areas, minimizing the potential dangers.

As the community deals with the aftermath of the disaster, the situation remains volatile. Water levels continue to recede, but significant amounts of standing water persist in many areas.

Cleanup and recovery efforts are underway, with local officials and residents working together to restore normalcy.
