Lionel Messi set to return to Argentina squad for Copa America clash against Ecuador at NRG Stadium in Houston

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Lionel Messi is set to return to the squad on Thursday night for Argentina’s Copa America clash with Ecuador at NRG Stadium.

Messi, an eight-time winner of the Ballon d’Or, which rewards the world’s best footballer, has been struggling with a persistent injury.

However, late reports from Argentinian media indicate that Messi is ready to return.

The 37-year-old caused a sensation in 2016 at NRG Stadium when his curling free-kick sealed Argentina’s victory over the United States in the Copa America.

In 2022, the man many consider the greatest player of all time gave Argentina their first World Cup title in 36 years in a thrilling victory over France.

Messi scored two goals and added another from the penalty spot to win the only major trophy that had eluded him.

The Copa America provides another international showcase for soccer in Houston.

NRG Stadium will host seven matches of the 2026 World Cup.

The 2026 schedule in Houston will include a knockout match on July 4, one of only two World Cup games held on American Independence Day.
