Attack on referee: School rugby games suspended this week

Rugby matches scheduled for this week as part of the 2024 Schools Rugby League have been postponed as the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Referees (SLSRFR) have decided not to referee any matches for the next two weeks.

The SLSRFR has decided not to referee any 2024 Schools Rugby League matches until 15 July 2024.

The decision was taken in connection with the incident that occurred on June 30 after the match between Science College and S. Thomas’, in which the referees were allegedly attacked by Science College supporters.

The Sri Lanka Schools’ Rugby Football Association (SLSRFA) has launched an independent investigation into the incident, parallel to the ongoing investigation by the Mount Lavinia Police.

The SLSRFA has also expressed its unconditional apology to the SLSRFR and called on the referees to reconsider their decision which led to the suspension of the Schools League ‘A’ Rugby tournaments. (News agency)
