Interstate 84 lanes reopened after nearly 100 traffic accidents in Boise area

At about 1:50 p.m., authorities reopened the westbound lanes of Interstate 84 in the southeast Boise area, Idaho State Police spokesman Aaron Snell told the Idaho Statesman.

The lanes between Mountain Home and Boise were closed “due to multiple collisions,” the Idaho Transportation Department said on social media on Monday at 10:16 am.

Between 5 a.m. and 11 a.m., Idaho State Police responded to 28 crashes involving 63 vehicles, Snell said. More than 20 other vehicles not involved in those crashes were stuck between crash scenes until the road was cleared, Snell said.

The department said traffic was “detoured from I-84 at exit 95.”

“ISP troopers and dispatchers continue to work reported accidents on I-84 between Caldwell and Mountain Home,” Snell told the Statesman in an email. “Westbound I-84 is closed at mile marker 90 due to multiple accidents in numerous locations. Multiple agencies are responding. Use EXTREME caution while traveling!”

Snell confirmed that snow and weather conditions were the cause of most of the collisions after 2 inches of snow fell in the region.

Snowfall caused slippery roads for some Treasure Valley drivers Monday morning. The Ada County Sheriff’s Office reported 81 crashes and 13 spin-outs between midnight and 9:30 a.m. Most of the snow and ice melted during the day.

“The roads are slippery now, but the snow will melt when the sun comes up this morning,” said the National Weather Service in Boise posted on social media. “Take your time and stay safe.”
