Suspect arrested following investigation into fatal overdose

After a four-month investigation, a suspect was arrested in connection with a fatal overdose.

On February 8, 2024, 19-year-old Eric Schertzer was found dead in a residence in the 100 block of Susan Place in Valrico.

Using investigative techniques, detectives with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office identified 21-year-old Baylee Jacobs as a suspect in the case. Detectives were able to link the deadly drugs the victim had ingested to Jacobs and obtained an arrest warrant.

During the course of the investigation, it was discovered that Jacobs had moved from Florida to Illinois. On June 24, 2024, Jacobs was arrested by local authorities at the Sterling Police Department in Illinois.

“Our opioid overdose investigators are tireless in their efforts to track down and arrest those who seek to harm our community with dangerous drugs,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “Their determination and hard work in pursuing every lead were critical in this investigation and resulted in the arrest of the individual responsible for putting poison on our streets for profit. Furthermore, this joint effort underscores the importance of cooperation within law enforcement and highlights the shared mission to protect our communities and combat the opioid crisis.”

Jacobs is charged with first-degree murder in connection with the sale of a controlled substance.
