Forecast First warning: Heavy storms possible Monday evening

In the Twin Cities, the time most likely for severe storms is between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Since the ground is already soaked from previous rains, it doesn’t take much to cause flooding, especially in the flood-prone areas.

Due to the possibility of severe storms late Monday afternoon and during the evening hours, the Minnesota Weather Service has issued an initial warning.

Severe thunderstorms with hail, damaging winds and heavy downpours are expected, according to meteorologist Jonathan Yuhas. Although thunderstorms are possible anytime between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m., they are most likely to occur in the Twin Cities metropolitan area between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.

The evening drive home could be problematic for drivers due to the possibility of sudden flooding, as the ground is already extremely wet due to the rainfall in June and hail can also lead to water accumulation.

Even though the danger of tornadoes is low, there is still a risk when storms form, according to Yuhas.

Storms are then expected to move southeast toward Rochester, Red Wing, Winona and La Crosse.

Warm and humid conditions throughout Monday will favor storms, with highs expected to be in the 30s to 35s. For the latest forecast from the Minnesota Weather Authority, visit CLICK HERE and an interactive radar of CLICK HERE.
