The investigation into the skeletal remains found near Illinois Beach State Park continues

Authorities continue to investigate the still-unidentified skeletal remains found on June 17 near the entrance to Adeline Jay Geo-Karis Illinois Beach State Park near Zion.

Lake County authorities continue to search for the identity and cause of death of the person whose skeletal remains were discovered June 17 in a wooded area near the entrance to Adeline Jay Geo-Karis Illinois Beach State Park near Zion.

An anonymous tip led Zion police to the remains, authorities said. They do not know how long the remains had been there, nor do they know how they died.

“Based on evidence collected at the scene, we are investigating whether it may have been a homeless individual living in close proximity to where the body was found,” Christopher Covelli, deputy chief of the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, wrote in an email.

Authorities are continuing to examine the remains, Covelli said, but he gave no indication when the investigation will be completed.

“We don’t want to sacrifice accuracy for speed,” he said.
