Shooting at Mount Horeb; Students return to school

MOUNT HOREB, ​​Wis.Healing at Mount Horeb; Teachers and students returned to the classroom for the first time Monday, May 6, after a student was shot and killed by police outside Mount Horeb Middle School last week.

The district’s superintendent, Steve Salerno, greeted students as they were dropped off Monday morning. Salerno said his students and staff are resilient.

He said there is still a long way to go but they are taking things one day at a time.

“Today is an important day as we return to the routines and routines of attending school, being with our classmates and learning. I suspect that every day will get a little better, our legs will get stronger and “We will continue to break new ground like this district has always done,” Salerno said.

Teachers and support staff met to create a plan for the day and praised teachers for their work in laying the foundation for the return.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, at approximately 11:11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 1, a citizen called 911 after witnessing a person, later identified as a Mount Horeb School District student, toward Mount Horeb Middle School with a backpack and something similar appeared to be a long gun.

Officers from the Mount Horeb Police Department responded to the school and located a person matching the description in the area of ​​the middle school east of the main entrance.

According to the DOJ press release, officers asked the person to drop the weapon, but the person did not comply.

The person pointed the gun at the officers, and the police fired their firearms, hitting the person. Life-saving measures were taken, but the person died at the scene.

The weapon recovered from the scene was determined to be a Ruger .177 caliber pellet rifle.

Salerno said he has heard from other superintendents across the country who have experienced something similar in their own district. He said the support and guidance helped Mount Horeb make its decision.
