Jammu- The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Thursday suspended a deputy superintendent of police (DSP) of the traffic department for alleged dereliction of duty in connection with a serious accident last month.

In the incident, which occurred on May 30 in Akhnoor area, 22 people were killed and 64 injured.

On May 31, the administration suspended six officials from the Ministry of Transport for alleged neglect of duty in connection with the accident.

“In pursuance of the Jammu and Kashmir Civil Services (Classification, Control & Appeal) Rules, 1956, Satish Kumar, DSP, Traffic Rural, Jammu, is hereby suspended with immediate effect,” Chandraker Bharti, Principal Secretary, Home Ministry, said in an order issued this evening.

During the suspension, the officer will remain assigned to the police headquarters, the order said.

The accident occurred when a bus carrying 86 devotees, travelling from Kurukshetra (Haryana) to the Shiv Khori shrine in Reasi district (Jammu and Kashmir), veered off the Jammu-Poonch highway and fell into a 46-metre-deep ravine.

The driver lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a blind curve near Tungi Morh in the Chowki Chora area.
