Suspect shot dead after aiming long gun at police officers in downtown Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (FOX5) – Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in downtown Las Vegas Thursday afternoon.

The shooting occurred in the 200 block of North 9th Street, between Ogden Street and Stewart Avenue.

Captain Kurt McKenize of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Office of Internal Oversight and Constitutional Policing provided further details during an afternoon press conference, explaining that the LVMPD dispatch center initially received a call reporting “an individual in an apartment complex armed with a long gun.”

Officers arrived at the scene, found the armed suspect and ordered him to drop the weapon. He reportedly refused and pointed the long gun at officers.

An unknown number of police officers then fired at the suspect, hitting him. Paramedics responded and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. No police officers were injured.

Captain McKenize added that it is not yet known if the suspect lived at the apartment complex in question. The public is advised to avoid the area as the investigation is still ongoing.
