Who gives in during an exit on the highways of Houston while continuing on the feeder?

HOUSTONAsk 2:

“The I-10 West Shepherd/Patterson exit is crazy. When you exit, the lane will continue to enter the highway or on the same lane you can go straight to get to the ramp. Question, who gives in? There are no signs.

Answer:

Generally, all cars traveling on an access road or service road must yield to traffic coming from an exit ramp. When in doubt, the best thing you can do is slow down, use your signal, and leave when it is safe to do so.

Sgt. Stephen Woodard of the Texas Department of Public Safety took a look at the I-10 West Shepherd/Patterson exit to give his thoughts.

“If two vehicles merge on the same lane, we always wonder who has the right of way. We know that individuals on the left side have first access to the roadway. Then the individual on the right side has next dibs. But when you’re talking about a lane like this, I will tell you that when it comes to transportation code 545.060, it’s going to play a huge role when it comes to traffic trying to enter that lane. You always have to make sure you have priority and that the merge is done safely,” Woodard said.
