Celebrate Juneteenth this year in his hometown of Galveston and other parts of the Greater Houston area.

HOUSTON – The Juneteenth holiday commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of slavery, thereby implementing the Emancipation Proclamation.

Although President Abraham Lincoln’s proclamation officially banned slavery in the Confederate states two and a half years earlier, the lack of Union troops in Texas meant that enforcement had been slow and inconsistent.

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, marks a pivotal moment in American history, symbolizing the triumph of freedom over oppression and the enduring struggle for civil rights.
