A Winnipeg man is facing a series of charges after police say he broke into an apartment building and sexually assaulted two teenagers just minutes after attempting to break into another home nearby.

According to police, the incident began around 5:20 p.m. on Thursday. A man walked to a house in the St. John’s neighborhood and observed from across the street a mother and her two children in the house’s yard.

Police said the woman felt uneasy, went into the house with her children and locked the door.

He then tried to break in.

“This person seemed very focused and determined to get into the house. Fortunately, he was not able to do so,” Const. Dani McKinnon said at a press conference on Monday.

Someone else in the house chased the man away. The woman then called the police.

About ten minutes later, according to police, the same man went to a nearby apartment building and illegally entered a suite.

He confronted two young girls with a syringe and forced them into a bedroom where he threatened to kill them.

According to police, he physically and sexually assaulted her.

The man passed out and the teenagers called 911.

When the officers arrived, they found the man still in the apartment.

He was taken into custody and the teenage girls were taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

“These individuals were extremely brave to come forward and speak to police. This is a very heinous incident,” McKinnon said.

“It’s probably going to be a long journey for these women, actually for all three of them.”

The investigation was taken over by the Sex Crimes Unit.

Alfred Colin Muskego, 49, of Winnipeg, is accused of a long list of crimes, including two counts of assault, two counts of sexual assault and sexual harassment.

He was taken into custody.
