Hot weekend in Atlanta | 11vivant.com

Expect temperatures to reach the 90s and highs this weekend, with heat index values near 100 degrees in some locations.

ATLANTA — We’re going to have some very hot conditions this weekend that give good reason to exercise caution if you’re spending an extended period of time outdoors.

The next few days should bring us temperatures in the mid to upper 90s, which represents the warmest temperatures we’ve had so far this year. This year, the hottest temperature we have experienced so far was 95 degrees, which we reached on Friday.

The worst of the heat will occur Saturday and Sunday, where temperatures will rise into the mid to upper 90s and heat index values in some locations could climb as high as 100 degrees during the post -noon. This could be considered a major heat hazard and you should listen to your body when you might feel like heat exhaustion is becoming a problem.

Temperatures will be a degree or two cooler on Sunday, but due to the higher humidity, it will be a bit warmer with a risk of extreme heat possible in some locations around metro Atlanta.

Heat exhaustion occurs when you begin to feel weak or dizzy, sweat excessively, have cool, pale, clammy skin, a rapid or weak pulse, and muscle cramps. If this starts to happen to you, find a cool place, drink plenty of water and try to get some rest.

Heatstroke can occur if you start to feel a throbbing headache, the sweating stops, the skin becomes red, hot and dry, the pulse becomes strong and fast and you may also lose consciousness. If this happens, call 911.

With temperatures so high, why haven’t we put a heat advisory in place? Heat advisories have criteria that must be met for an advisory to be issued. For our area, heat index values are expected to reach 105 degrees, but as of Friday afternoon, it doesn’t look like that will happen this weekend.

Other things you should watch out for this weekend given the heat are your pets and children.

Remember to check your car before locking it and be sure to let your pets and children out. Also, don’t leave your kids in the car even if you’re only going to the store to pick up one or two things.

The temperature inside a car, when it’s 95 degrees outside, can reach nearly 130 degrees in 30 minutes.

The pavement can also be very hot for your pet’s paws. try to avoid walking in the middle of the day, when temperatures are hottest. if the outside temperature is 95 degrees, concrete could reach 140 degrees and asphalt up to 155 degrees. This could easily damage your pet’s paws and turn into an upsetting experience accompanied by an expensive vet bill.

Although it will still be warm, temperatures will approach average by the middle of next week with highs around 90 degrees.

Air quality could also continue to be an issue through the weekend, due to the expected heat and sunshine. Much like what we covered Wednesday through Friday, air quality may be considered unhealthy for sensitive groups due to increased amounts of ozone.
