Pacific Surfliner train service delayed in San Diego after Sorrento Valley incident – NBC 7 San Diego

According to an Amtrak official, rail traffic came to a standstill in San Diego’s Sorrento Valley on Friday afternoon when a Pacific Surfliner struck and killed a teenage cyclist.

“On June 14, Amtrak train 770 was traveling from Goleta, California, to San Diego at approximately 12:45 p.m. when a person trespassing on the tracks made contact with the train in the city of San Diego,” Amtrak said in a statement released that afternoon. “No injuries were reported among the 254 passengers and crew on board.”

At around 5:30 a.m., the San Diego Sheriff’s Department released the following information about the boy’s cause of death:

Witnesses told officers that three boys on bicycles were stopped at the barriers to allow a northbound train to pass. After the northbound train passed, a 17-year-old boy crossed the tracks on his bicycle, not realizing that a southbound train was also passing. The boy was struck by the train and did not survive his injuries. The other two cyclists were uninjured.

The Amtrak official said when San Diego police and firefighters arrived at the scene, they found the teenager on the tracks and he died at the scene.

The identity of the victim has not yet been released by authorities.

The incident occurred near the intersection of Sorrento Valley Boulevard and Roselle Street.

The train service notified passengers at 2:04 p.m. that they should expect extended delays until further notice due to “unauthorized activity.” Shortly after 6 p.m., NBC 7 confirmed that train service had resumed.

San Diego sheriff’s officials are on site investigating the incident. The Amtrak official said the agency is working with local law enforcement in the investigation.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Sheriff’s Department at (858) 565-5200.
