Supreme Court stays release of Annu Kapoor’s Hamare Baarah on Islamophobia allegations

Following today’s hearing, the Supreme Court has stopped the release of the controversial film starring Annu Kapoor Hamare Baarah, which is accused of portraying a particular community in the country in a derogatory manner. The Supreme Court has stayed the release of the film pending the Bombay High Court. investigates and solves the case related to the offensive scenes.

The government of Karnataka has already banned the film

For those unaware, the film has already been banned by the Karnataka government to avoid communal tensions. The decision was reportedly taken by the government after several minority organisations demanded it after watching the trailer of the film starring Annu Kapoor, Manoj Joshi, Paritosh Tripathi and Parth Samthaan.

Accusations of Islamophobia

Ever since the film’s poster was released, it has been accused of Islamophobia. Many people objected to the film’s portrayal of Muslims as the cause of the population explosion. Director of the film Kamal Chandra had previously said that the film’s poster was not offensive and needed to be seen in the right context.

The film, which highlights the issue of population explosion, is about Manzoor Ali Khan Sanjari, who lost his first wife in childbirth and continues to have children with his second wife, who is now pregnant with her sixth child. Although doctors warn that the pregnancy is a threat to her life, Khan refuses to consider abortion. Determined to save her stepmother, his daughter Alfiya sues her father to demand the procedure. The film explores whether Alfiya can convince her father and the court, while challenging the deep-rooted patriarchy in her society.

The film was released in theaters on June 7 at 10 a.m.
