Houstonians see color for the first time thanks to Color Factory

HOUSTON – Color blindness affects at least one in 12 men, one in 200 women. That means several hundred thousand Houstonians don’t see like the rest of us.

Color blindness is generally something people live with without problem. But there is always a curiosity: what do others see? Is it worth buying special glasses to see color? Would it be easier to do your job or match your clothes?

Now colorblind customers at the Color Factory, located in Upper Kirby, can borrow special glasses and see color in a new way.

These are glasses that anyone can buy online and see the world in all shades, but many people choose not to buy them themselves because they can be expensive, around $300.

Do they even work?!

“They really work!” » said Daniel Rodriguez in amazement when he put on the glasses for the first time.

“I could see it, but I couldn’t see that much distinction before that,” Robert Garcia said.

Tina Malhotra, CEO of Color Factory, said they were able to loan the glasses to customers through a partnership with EnChroma.

“Color Factory really takes a progressive stance toward accessibility and inclusiveness, and this is just one of the ways we do that, by making all colors visible to our colorblind customers,” Malhotra said .

“It really helps me see different types of tones,” Kate Stacy explained.
