18-year-old allegedly led police on a chase with a stolen SUV

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — One of four people arrested after police stopped a stolen SUV in East Providence is due in court Friday.

Austin Pereira is charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, fleeing from police (vehicle in a chase), failure to stop at an accident resulting in vehicle damage, and obstructing an officer in the execution of his duty.

Pereira, 18, of Warwick, was allegedly caught driving the stolen vehicle on Thursday. East Providence Police Captain Michael Rapoza said Pereira fled a traffic stop and then sped through town until he collided with a patrol car near the intersection of Warren and Pawtucket avenues.

Pereira was taken into custody without incident along with three other people whose identities have not yet been established.

The incident remains under investigation. Rapoza said Pereira could face further charges.
