Serial killer and rapist from Chipinge faces six more rape charges

It is alleged that Chauke sometimes slit the genitals of his victims and fled with them. He is also said to have taken underwear with him for alleged rituals.

At his first appearance before Chipinge Justice of the Peace Alfred Chinembiri last week, Chauke was not called upon to give evidence and was remanded in custody until June 12.

He was charged with three counts of murder under Section 47(1) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23.

He is now facing six more rape charges.

On Tuesday, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said Chauke was arrested on May 27, 2024 for cattle theft and taken to ZRP Chipinge.

He was then searched by detectives who helped him find various items of women’s clothing, a mobile phone and a machete hidden in a sack and a bag.

The items seized matched the description of goods stolen on May 26, 2024 in a bush area along Usanga-Bangazani Road in Chipinge, where Cylia Maponese (45) was killed, Commissioner Nyathi said.

Last week, according to the NPA, Ruth Sithole was working in her field in Chikwanda Village Chief Mutema area of Chipinge on 21 October 2023 when Chauke approached her and asked if he could do manual labour in her fields. She reportedly refused his request.

Chauke allegedly grabbed Sithole by the neck and dragged her for about 40 metres. He allegedly forced her to the ground and raped her once before strangling her to death.

Chauke is said to have taken his machete and beat the deceased’s dog all over his body before taking her lunch box and walking away. He was found in possession of a spoon belonging to the deceased.

In the second incident on April 24, 2024, Honeni Manaka Masimandoyo was walking in Derera village under Chief Ngorima in Chimanimani when she met Chauke.

Chauke proposed to her, but she refused and said she was married. Chauke did not like that and is said to have grabbed Masimandoyo’s arm and thrown her to the ground.

Chauke is said to have dragged Masimandoyo to a nearby bush, where he strangled her until she was completely weak and then raped her.

After raping her, he took his knife, cut out her private parts and took her panties and swaddling cloth before fleeing the scene. He was found in possession of the deceased’s panties.

In the third incident on 26 May 2024, Siliya Maponese was on her way to Mabheka Chipinge Scort Village when she met Chauke on a footpath near the Budzi River in Bangazani area of Chipinge.

Chauke is said to have proposed to Maponese but was rejected. He is said to have grabbed her and dragged her into the nearby bush where he raped and killed her.

The accused took her mobile phone and left. The said mobile phone was found on him.
