Maine school employee charged with assault after March incident involving 12-year-old

A 48-year-old speech therapist is facing assault charges and a court date following an incident in March involving a 12-year-old student. The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday that it has completed its investigation into the alleged March 25 incidents at New Gloucester Middle School.

Officials say the 12-year-old’s parents notified the NGMS school safety officer, who is employed by the sheriff’s office, on May 28. It is unclear if the school or the parents knew about the incident before May 28.

Officials determined the 12-year-old student had been physically assaulted during the school day in March at approximately 12:10 p.m. Officials did not elaborate on the nature of the assault or any injuries the student sustained.

Speech therapist Thomas Morawiec has been summoned to appear in Portland District Court on August 14.
