Sweltering heat and air quality warning this weekend

PHOENIX – It will be the hottest weekend of the year so far!

In Phoenix, highs of almost 40 degrees will be reached on Saturday and Sunday, with lows in the early morning exceeding 21 degrees.

We also pursue other environmental issues. Warning of high ozone pollution is in force throughout the valley on Saturday and a Monitoring ozone pollution was issued for Tuesday. (This may be upgraded to a warning as it approaches.)

If you have asthma, COPD or other respiratory conditions, limit your time outdoors in the afternoon on days with high levels of air pollution, or you may experience difficulty breathing. Exposure to ozone can increase the number and severity of asthma attacks, cause or worsen bronchitis or other lung diseases, and reduce the body’s ability to fight infection.

Children, the elderly and anyone who exercises outdoors can also experience health problems from ozone pollution. Symptoms can include itchy eyes, nose and throat, wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain and upper respiratory problems.

We can all help to prevent the pollution problem from getting worse. If you have a petrol vehicle, try to drive as little as possible this week. Carpooling, working from home or filling up your car in the evenings also helps.

During these long, sunny days, we are now heading into peak ozone pollution season in the Valley, so this problem is likely to persist through most of June.

It is also the hottest time of year in the desert. Here in the valley, temperatures will remain above 30 degrees for the foreseeable future, with lows in the early morning between 18 and 24 degrees.

In Phoenix, temperatures could even reach 43 degrees Celsius for the first time this year by the end of next week!

In Phoenix, temperatures typically first reach 109 degrees Fahrenheit around June 11. The earliest day on record was May 8, 1989.
