Alcohol may be a factor in boating accident after two people die: NS RCMP

Two Nova Scotia men are dead after a boat they were traveling in sank in the Annapolis River in Granville Centre, NS, on Monday.

At approximately 5:30 p.m., Annapolis District RCMP, along with firefighters, ground search and rescue teams and members of the Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC), responded to a report of a 14-foot vessel that had sunk with four people on board.

On scene, RCMP learned that two people, a 46-year-old man from Granville Center and a 27-year-old man from Weymouth, NS, had swum from the sunken boat and made it safely to shore.

A police news release Tuesday afternoon said three fire department search boats, a CH-149 Cormorant helicopter and a JRCC C-130 Hercules fixed-wing aircraft were stationed at the scene.

A third person, a 49-year-old man from Granville Center, was found by a search boat around 11 p.m. He was taken to the hospital in Kentville, NS, where he later died as a result of his injuries.

RCMP say the search for the fourth man continued throughout the evening.

According to police, the remains of a 26-year-old Granville Center man were found and recovered around midnight.

At this time, police believe alcohol was a factor.

The investigation is ongoing.
