Rayburn prisoner found guilty of assault after attacking guard

WASHINGTON PARISH, Louisiana (WGNO) – A New Orleans man has been found guilty of a 2023 incident in which he assaulted a guard at the Rayburn Correctional Center.

According to documents filed with the Washington Parish District Attorney’s Office, 51-year-old Bruce Stipe was found guilty on May 22 of assaulting a correctional employee.

Court documents state that on October 26, 2023, Rayburn guards responded to a disturbance in an inmate’s dormitory. As they attempted to calm the situation, they were reportedly surrounded by several inmates and began verbally attacking them.

The documents say that during the riot, Stipe “assumed a fighting stance” and allegedly shouted profanities. He then attacked one of the security guards, punching him in the face and biting him three times, according to court documents.

Guards standing nearby were able to control and overpower Stipe.

The security guard’s injuries were treated by the facility’s medical staff.

According to court documents, this is Stipe’s second attack on a Rayburn security guard, following an incident in 2021.

Stipe is said to have previously been convicted of serious crimes in New Orleans, including attempted premeditated murder of a police officer, attempted premeditated murder, felony robbery, simple burglary and simple escape.

He is currently serving a 40-year prison sentence for attempted murder and escape. Sentencing for Stipe is scheduled for July 8.
