Man arrested at seatbelt check for drunk driving

RIVERHEAD, NY – A Riverhead man was arrested and charged with drunken driving during the Buckle Up New York/Click It or Ticket campaign Thursday night, police said.

According to Riverhead Town Police, officers conducted the call at 10:15 p.m. on Roanoake Avenue near the First Street parking lot.

In addition to numerous citations for violations such as improper seat belt use, improper use of child restraints, uninspected vehicles and unauthorized window tinting, a man was charged with drunken driving, police said.

Maynor DeLeon, 42, entered the checkpoint with an open container of alcohol in his vehicle, police said. DeLeon was subsequently arrested and charged with drunken driving. He was transported to police headquarters for processing and held there until his arraignment in the morning, police said.

His vehicle was seized under Suffolk County’s impound law due to a previous drunken driving conviction, police said.
