Seven security personnel were killed in two attacks in Pakistan’s North Waziristan

NEW DELHI: At least seven people were killed and two injured in two separate militant attacks on Sunday in Pakistan’s restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Five security personnel died and two were injured when an improvised explosive device targeting a bomb disposal unit exploded in the first attack in the Hassan Khel area of North Waziristan district, which borders Afghanistan, on Saturday, according to media reports citing local officials.

Militants reportedly began firing at security forces shortly after the explosion. The militants targeted a security post in Seeman district, leaving two security personnel dead. It was subsequently reported that the bodies of security personnel and injured people were flown to the Combined Military Hospital in Bannu.

Immediately after the attacks, security forces cordoned off the areas and began searching the areas.

Similar attacks have recently occurred in various parts of the province. The two attacks came after the destruction of a private girls’ school by unidentified militants in Tehsil Shewa of North Waziristan district on the night of May 8.

Police said the attackers first tortured the security guard and then blew up two rooms at the school.

Similar attacks occurred in May last year when two government girls’ schools in Mirali were destroyed.
