Man killed in officer-involved shooting in Kansas

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred late Friday evening in Kansas City, Kansas, according to a media release from the KBI.

The Kansas City Kansas Police Department (KCKPD) requested the KBI to conduct an investigation on Friday, May 10, at approximately 11:20 p.m. KBI agents responded to investigate.

A silver Hyundai Sonata was reported stolen on May 10. KCKPD has gathered information indicating the stolen car was located in the area of ​​S. 7th St. Trafficway and I-35. Shortly thereafter, at approximately 11:10 p.m., a citizen called 911 to report that a silver car had stopped in the 1500 block of S. 7th St. Trafficway and the subjects were running away. At almost the same time, a KCKPD officer arrived and observed three male subjects fleeing the car. He pursued them and initiated a foot pursuit.

Preliminary information indicates the officer was pursuing the subjects as they ran up the I-35 South on-ramp. During the chase, one of the men hid in thick undergrowth and shot the officer from behind. The KCKPD officer returned fire, striking the man several times. The officer and a second deputy were then able to take a 16-year-old male into custody.

Life-saving measures were attempted and emergency medical services responded, but the man who was shot was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities are still working to identify the deceased. The third topic has not yet been decided. The officer was not injured in the shooting.
