Woman (21) sexually harassed, robbed and driven around in a car for hours in Cape Town

Recent police crime statistics show that kidnapping remains a very real problem across South Africa.

A woman (21) was sexually assaulted after allegedly hitting an email provider’s car in Cape Town on Friday (May 10).

The incident occurred at around 9:25 p.m. Bellville Police Station spokesman Capt. Aubrey Morwenyane confirmed.

According to Morwenyane, the woman requested the car at her workplace. When the driver arrived, he instructed her to sit in the back seat.

“While she was driving, another man came out of the trunk of the vehicle and sat next to her. He then removed the gun and pointed it at her,” Morwenyane said.

“He demanded all of her belongings, including her laptop, cell phone and work scanner.”

The woman was then sexually abused. They then told her to call her family and ask for money.

When there was no response, she was dropped off at the side of the road. A case for robbery with a firearm and rape was opened. Emre Uygen, chairman of the Bellville Community Policing Forum, says the woman was dropped off in Kraaifontein.

“I strongly condemn yesterday’s horrific incident in which a young woman was robbed and sexually assaulted,” he said.

“We call on Bellville SAPS detectives to work tirelessly and expeditiously to arrest the suspects and bring them to justice.”

He is calling on the government to introduce more security measures for emailing passengers and drivers.

“We call for swift action to prevent such heinous crimes in the future.”
