Fire at Hartland landfill under investigation

HARTLAND – A fire Thursday evening at the Hartland Landfill was still under investigation Monday, a city official said.

A local resident sent Hartland City Manager Christopher Littlefield a picture of smoke at the landfill around 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Littlefield said in a statement Friday afternoon.

The Hartland Volunteer Fire Department responded to the emergency call along with firefighters from St. Albans and Canaan, Littlefield said. Firefighters remained on scene until about 12:20 a.m.

Photos posted on social media showed large flames in a relatively small area of the landfill and smoke filling the air.

No injuries were reported.

Littlefield said the fire was still under investigation Monday afternoon. The state Department of Environmental Protection, which is responsible for regulating landfills, visited the scene, he said.

“The City of Hartland thanks all of the volunteer firefighters, supporting emergency personnel and the two construction crew members who responded with machinery,” Littlefield said in the statement Friday.

Littlefield said in an email Monday that the city government and fire department are gathering information about the fire and plan to release a report in the future.

The city-owned and operated landfill is located south of Route 43/151, near downtown Hartland, and receives various types of waste, including sludge, from across the state.
