Two dead in plane crash in West Atlantic City

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP – When Chris Wilson arrived at a burning car on Black Horse Pike Friday night following a four-car crash, he knew he had to help.

Wilson, 46, of Vineland was on his way to Rainbow Sushi in Ventnor with a friend when he noticed a silver Nissan Sentra about 200 feet from his car. The crash killed two people and injured seven others, police said.

“I’ve never seen anything like that in my life,” Wilson said of the scene. “It was surreal.”

Wilson ran to the car and tried to get the people out of the car. With the help of another man, Wilson managed to rescue the two people in the car.

Then they came across a teenager trapped in the car.

“The smoke from the fire turned black and hit me in the face,” Wilson said. “We were having trouble getting him out, so we screamed for help, then this big Spanish guy came running and was able to help us get him out.”

Another passenger in the silver Sentra, Gabriella Constrantino, 22, of Pleasantville, died in the crash, police said.

Two juvenile passengers, a man and a woman, who were in the car are in critical condition. The male passenger was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus, and the woman was flown to Cooper Medical Center in Camden.

Another passenger in the silver Sentra, Kenneth Jones, 25, of Pleasantville, was taken to City Campus for his injuries.

The accident is currently being investigated by the township police and the Atlantic County District Attorney’s Office.

Township police responded to a traffic accident on Black Horse Pike in front of the Oh St. Joseph Resort Hotel around 8:19 p.m.

The silver 2017 Nissan Sentra was traveling westbound on Black Horse Pike when it crossed into the eastbound lane and collided with a 2018 Kia Forte driven by Escarlin Suriel, 21, of Atlantic City, police said.

The force of the impact caused the Kia Forte to be thrown backwards and hit by a red Nissan Sentra (model year 2020), which was also traveling east, police said.

The red Sentra left the road and came to rest on the west side of the roadway. The Kia Forte came to rest in the swampy area on the east side of the road, police said.

The silver Sentra came to a stop in the eastbound lane, which is traveling westbound. A fourth vehicle, a silver 2019 Toyota Yaris, was struck by debris from one of the vehicles.

After the head-on collision, the silver Sentra caught fire.

Two other passengers in the red Sentra were taken to City Campus with minor injuries.

Township police praised the work of Wilson and others who helped with the rescue efforts.

“There were several witnesses and other passing motorists who then stopped and helped pull the occupants of the Nissan from the vehicle before it was fully engulfed in flames,” the township police said in a statement. “We are grateful to the individuals who acted quickly and selflessly.”

During the accident investigation, the Black Horse Pike was diverted for approximately 7.5 hours.

Responding to the scene of the accident were the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office, Egg Harbor Township EMS, Atlantic City EMS, AtlantiCare paramedics, West Atlantic City Fire Department, Bargaintown Fire Department, Atlantic City Police Department, Pleasantville Police Department, A-1 Towing, and the NJDOT Traffic Accident Response Team.
