Two dead after car leaves Highway 1

SAN MATEO COUNTY, Calif. (KRON) — Two people were killed when a vehicle plunged off a cliff in the Devil’s Slide area between Pacifica and Montara Friday morning, the California Highway Patrol confirmed. The incident occurred in the southbound lanes of Highway 1 south of the Tom Lantos Tunnel.

From 11:40 a.m. the roads were closed in both directions and were only reopened shortly before 3:00 p.m.

Highway 1 will be closed again in both directions around the area on Saturday. The road will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to noon “due to police and fire operations,” CHP said.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the vehicle involved, a gray two-door sedan, fell about 90 to 120 meters down the embankment.

A helicopter with two lifeguards on board was put on alert but could not fly due to weather conditions.

CHP advised drivers to expect delays and use alternate routes.
