The Texas Department of Transportation is partnering with law enforcement agencies nationwide to crack down on speeding.

“The worst case scenario would be that you have to pay with your life or someone else’s life,” said TxDOT spokeswoman Bambi Hall. “You certainly don’t want to be in the middle of paying a ticket.”

“Operation Slow Down,” a statewide period of increased speed limits, continues through Aug. 4. It is part of the “Be Safe. Be Smart” speeding prevention campaign.

“We want people to be safe, drive smart and slow down because it saves lives,” Hall said.

In Houston, Speeding fines range from $224 to $534.

According to TxDOT, the Houston area recorded more than 22,000 speeding-related traffic crashes in 2023, resulting in 109 deaths and more than 484 serious injuries. Statewide in 2023, speeding played a role in more than 160,000 traffic crashes, including nearly 1,500 deaths.

“Speeding is one of the deadliest problems on our roadways,” TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams said in a news release. “Getting to the office, home or wherever you’re going a few minutes faster is not worth putting your life or the lives of others at risk.”

Since November 7, 2000, at least one person has died on Texas roads every day.
