Child in stroller dies alongside adult in accident in Sydney

A child in a stroller and an adult were killed at a train station.

The stroller with two children rolled onto the tracks at Carlton station, south Sydneyon Sunday at 12.25 p.m.

A 40-year-old man tried to save the two two-year-old boys by jumping onto the tracks, but at that moment a train started moving on the platform, killing both him and one of the children.

The second boy and a 39-year-old woman are being assessed by NSW Ambulance paramedics; neither was injured.

New South Wales Police urged the public to avoid the area.

“Emergency services are at Carlton station following an incident on the tracks,” said a statement on X.

“The public is urged to avoid the area. The investigation is ongoing.”

There are no trains running on the T4 Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra Line between Wolli Creek and Hurstville.

Those on the train at the time of the incident said they felt a “shake” before the train suddenly came to a halt, the Daily Telegraph reported.

All passengers were evacuated 20 minutes later and Sydney Trains is now attempting to offer alternative travel options to passengers stranded at the station.

“We are arranging replacement buses between Wolli Creek and Hurstville and between Sydenham and Tempe, however none are available at the moment,” Sydney Trains said on Tuesday at 1pm.

Trains continue to run between Bondi Junction and Central and between Hurstville and Waterfall and Cronulla.

Those travelling to or from Wolli Creek can take the Airport Line’s T8 service to get to the city, Sydney Trains said.
