Ohio police officers on RNC security shoot man in neighborhood near event

Top line

In Milwaukee, a man was shot and killed by Ohio police officers near the site of the Republican National Convention. The officers were in the city to assist local law enforcement with security at the Republican event. The incident occurred amid heightened security measures surrounding political events in the wake of the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

Key data

The incident occurred Tuesday afternoon in a residential neighborhood about a mile from the site of the Republican National Convention.

Five uniformed officers from the Columbus, Ohio, police department shot the man, who was reportedly carrying a knife in each hand and “was involved in an altercation with another unarmed individual,” Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman told reporters.

The five officers were part of a 13-person bicycle patrol unit and were discussing their daily duties when the incident occurred, Norman added.

The patrol unit is in Milwaukee along with a large contingent of thousands of police officers from other states to assist local authorities with security arrangements for the Republican National Convention.

Police also released body camera footage of the incident, which shows officers yelling to a man who was involved in an altercation with another man, “Drop the knife!” Then they open fire on the armed man as he approaches the other person.

Other city and police officials told the Associated Press that the incident did not appear to be related to security at the convention itself.
