10-year-old boy allegedly killed by foster mother begged neighbor to adopt him: Docs

A 10-year-old boy who authorities say was killed by his foster mother asked a neighbor to adopt him minutes before his murder.

The boy, identified as Dakota Levi Stevens in court documents obtained by WGN, NBC Chicago and CBS Chicago, died April 25 after a medical emergency in Liberty Township, Indiana, the Porter County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Two months after Dakota’s death, authorities issued an arrest warrant for his foster mother, Jennifer Lee Wilson, 48, on a charge of involuntary manslaughter, PEOPLE previously reported. Wilson was arrested on July 13 in Berrien County, Michigan, the county sheriff’s office said in a news release.

Wilson is currently in custody in Michigan on a warrant for her arrest. Court records show the charges in Indiana are still pending and no plea is scheduled. It is not immediately clear if she has retained an attorney.

According to police, Dakota had bruises on her neck and chest, WGN, NBC Chicago and CBS Chicago reported, citing a probable cause affidavit.

WGN reported that according to the affidavit, Wilson admitted to lying on top of Dakota for five minutes before the boy stopped moving.

Police also reviewed footage from the house’s Ring camera, CBS reported, which allegedly includes Wilson saying, “I was on top of him and he was misbehaving.”

About 30 minutes before emergency vehicles arrived at Wilson’s home, Dakota ran to a neighbor’s house and asked her to adopt him, media reports said.

CBS reported that the boy allegedly asked the neighbor to adopt him because his parents would punch him in the face, the affidavit said.

Wilson then came to take Dakota home, and the neighbor reportedly told police she saw no signs of injury on the 10-year-old, CBS reported.

According to NBC, Dakota’s cause of death was investigated as mechanical asphyxia and the manner of death was determined to be homicide.
