‘We’re doing well,’ says Dan Patrick Harris County judge denied requests for aid ahead of Hurricane Beryl

HOUSTON – Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is calling out Harris County officials, accusing the judge of refusing assistance before Hurricane Beryl swept through southeast Texas.

In a fiery message, Patrick said he had contacted Judge Lina Hidalgo several times before Hurricane Beryl hit, and that in the last message she simply said, “We’re fine.”

“We haven’t received any requests from the Harris County judge,” he said. “So I assume all of his citizens are doing well in unincorporated Harris County — but if they are, we’re here to respond.”

Her comments come just days after Hidalgo appeared to praise Patrick, who served as interim governor in Greg Abbott’s absence, saying he had “taken the necessary steps to allow the administration to authorize (federal) aid.”

Later in the afternoon, President Joe Biden approved a request to declare a federal state of emergency for the state of Texas.

The acting governor then took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to suggest that the president was politicizing Hurricane Beryl by briefly discussing the phone call he had with him.

“We had a cordial call today that resulted in him granting my request for a major disaster declaration,” Patrick said. “But that’s not enough for him.”

KPRC 2 reached out to Hidalgo’s office for an updated comment, but did not hear back as of this writing.

This is a developing story and will continue to be updated as new information becomes available.
