Man arrested after scammers tricked woman into buying £13 of gold – WFTV

OCALA, Fla. – A man posing as a courier is facing charges of organized fraud after a 74-year-old Ocala woman nearly had her life savings stolen.

Weikai Zhang of Winter Garden was arrested by police and federal agents on Tuesday as he attempted to collect gold packages from the victim.

Investigators said they became aware of the ongoing scam, which originated from a call center in Asia. They said the scammers gained access to the woman’s financial information after tricking her into believing her computer was infected with a virus.

Officials said the scammers convinced the frightened woman to “save” her money from being stolen by emptying her bank accounts and using the money to buy gold, which a “federal courier” would keep safe for her.

According to Zhang’s affidavit at the time of his arrest, officers intercepted FedEx packages from a gold dealer containing more than 6 kg of the precious metal worth $500,000.

Zhang was arrested when he arrived at the woman’s home posing as a courier. Agents said they noticed his minivan was driving suspiciously and its GPS was set to the woman’s address.

Zhang faces multiple felony charges in connection with the plot and is being held at the Marion County Detention Center on $61,000 bail.
